Technical Skill vs Communication: Freelancers and Agencies Need Both

People regularly tell freelancers and agencies that communication and personality are more important than technical skills.

I disagree with that framing.

Your ability to deliver the service you sell is the baseline. A developer must build software that works. A designer must solve the real product problem. A marketer must create work capable of producing value.

Two surgeons with different strengths

Imagine an exceptional surgeon who performs a rare operation better than almost anyone else.

The surgeon may be abrupt, difficult to reach, and poor at explaining the process. Patients may still choose that person because the technical ability is unusually valuable. In this case, exceptional skill compensates for some weakness in communication.

Now imagine another surgeon who is not considered the greatest specialist in the world but performs the operation properly. This doctor explains what will happen, answers questions, follows up, and makes patients feel safe.

That combination may be why people choose the second surgeon and recommend them.

People are evaluating the result they need, the confidence they feel, and the difficulty of reaching that result. The weight of each depends on the situation.

Make your ability easier to trust and use

In professional services, a client can struggle to benefit from your skill if you disappear, misunderstand what they need, or make them chase every update. A freelancer who delivers good work and communicates clearly can keep winning projects over someone technically stronger.

Communication also affects the work itself. Clarifying a request before implementation can prevent building the wrong thing. Raising a problem while there is still time to respond gives the client a decision to make. An update that explains what is blocked helps both sides act.

Those are useful responsibilities to improve alongside your craft. Good communication can make weak work look reassuring for a while, but it cannot protect a bad outcome forever.

What clients actually remember

Two of our client testimonials capture this combination directly.

One client called me “One of the best people I worked with, in terms of both skill and personality.”

Another said: “The best talent we worked with, both in terms of skills, personality and delivery.”
