AI Will Destroy Agencies That Sell Labor

AI is making many forms of service production dramatically faster.

Code can be drafted in minutes. Design directions can be explored quickly. Research can be summarized, copy can be produced, and repetitive delivery work can be automated.

For an agency whose value is measured mainly by how many hours this production requires, that is a serious threat.

If the offer is “this work takes us one hundred hours,” better tools will keep attacking the number.

That does not mean agencies are becoming unnecessary.

It puts more pressure on the agency to show how it carries the whole product outcome.

The decisions arrive connected

A founder usually does not arrive with every question answered. They have a business they are trying to build.

The agency has to understand that business, challenge assumptions, and decide what should be built first. Then product, design and engineering have to turn that understanding into something people can use.

Consider a promised refund flow. Choosing a payment service is an engineering decision, but whether it supports the required refund behavior affects the customer experience, the operations team and the work needed before launch. If that limitation is found after the flow has been designed and built, several people may have to redo their work.

A team cannot make each of those choices independently and assume the parts will fit at the end.

Experience across applications and industries helps us recognize recurring connections and tradeoffs before they become expensive mistakes. It also helps us ask questions the original feature request did not include.

The agency carries the decision into delivery

Good advice is only part of the work.

The agreed behavior needs to survive implementation. The team must test the complete journey, including failures and operational cases, then remain close enough to launch to see what happens when real users arrive.

If a decision changes, the design, system and delivery plan need to change together. The client should not have to coordinate those consequences between several disconnected specialists.

AI can help with the research, alternatives, implementation and testing. Those gains are useful across difficult work too. The agency still has to connect the results and verify that they serve the product.

Judgment without execution is not enough

This argument does not excuse slow agencies or turn vague advice into a premium service.

Judgment has value only when it leads to better execution.

Saying “we provide strategy” while delivering slowly or poorly is not a defense against AI. It is another weak offer.

Evaluate the offer differently

When choosing an agency, do not look only at the hours inside the quotation.

Ask:

  • Can the team explain how a product decision changes the design, engineering work or launch plan?
  • Who resolves those tradeoffs and keeps everyone working from the same decision?
  • How will the complete result be tested, and who stays responsible through launch?
  • Where will AI help the team deliver faster and better?

You are hiring a team to bring the whole thing together. Better tools should make that team more effective at the responsibility it agreed to carry.
